“Another one, Spencer?” asked Derek with a sigh.
“It needed a home, Derek.” Spencer had a pleading look in his eyes.
“Did you even think about Clooney?”
“Derek, if I didn’t take it, no one else would. It needs a good home.”
“But a world almanac from 1953? Some of the countries in it don’t even exist anymore.”
“Derek, I couldn’t let all those beautiful maps in it end up inside a trash dumpster.”
“All right, Spencer, it can stay,” said Derek. “As long as you promise not to leave it out where Clooney can get to it. You know that he thinks those things are his chew toys.”
Spencer let out a squeal of happiness as he threw his arms around Derek.
This is inspired by neutral-gray’s discussion about maps.
The first map that Derek ever gave Spencer was a framed map of Sherwood Forest. Pressed into helping Penelope find the perfect birthday gift for Kevin, Derek found himself in an antique store that he hadn’t even know existed until then. He had been wandering around the store to keep himself occupied, while Penelope haggled over the price of a vintage Millennium Falcon in it’s original packaging, when he spotted the map nestled in amongst a grouping of decorative china plates. As soon as he saw it, he knew that would look perfect hanging in Spencer’s living room.
The second map that Derek gave Spencer was a shower curtain with the map of the world printed on it. The vibrant colors really helped brighten up the younger man’s bathroom. However, Derek couldn’t help, but be a little jealous of the shower curtain. After all, it got to see Reid naked at least once a day.
The third map that Derek gave Spencer was a one of a kind work of art that Derek commissioned a friend, who was an artist, to make for him. It was a drawing of a human heart with black lines drawn across it. The name Spencer was written in the middle of it.
“What is it?” inquired Spencer.
“It’s a map of my heart and all roads lead to you,” replied Derek.
Here’s one that you can add to your map collection. Wish you were here to ride the tube with me. Miss you lots.
